About Dymax MD® UV Adhesives for Medical Device Assembly

Dymax MD Medical Device Adhesives are light curing adhesives which significantly improve your process control and reduce your assembly processing costs. Formulated with medical device assembly in mind, these adhesives meet ISO 10993 standards and biocompatibility and are resistant to common sterilisation methods including EtO and gamma. They have excellent adhesion to substrates common in medical device manufacturing such as PC, ABS, PVC, stainless steel, polycarbonate, glass and more.

And of course, Dymax MD adhesives have all the advantages of UV curing. They cure in seconds upon exposure to UV and/or visible light for fast assembly of medical devices and components. UV/visible light curing technology also permits bonding of UV inhibited and tinted plastics. Many Dymax MD adhesives are optimised for LED UV light curing.

Process Control

Some Dymax MD adhesive products incorporate See-Cure, Ultra-Red fluorescence, or Encompass® technology to aid product and process development and in-line inspection. Dymax MD adhesives enhance the function of automated vision equipment which can be used for in-line inspection for high-speed, high-volume production.

Assembly Processing Costs

Dymax MD adhesives have several advantages that can provide assembly cost savings compared to, for example, two-part epoxies. As single part materials, they are straightforward to dispense directly from their syringe packaging and easily automated. Once dispensed, the adhesive placement can be checked in-line as the adhesive is changes colour as it cures. Dymax MD adhesives cure nearly instantaneously on-demand with UV light and can be moved on to the next stage of assembly immediately.

Their in-line quality control features combined with precise, repeatable automated dispensing result in reduced material waste and fewer scrapped parts.

Applications

Catheter Assembly Adhesives
Quickly bond catheter substrates with LED or UV/Visible light. The Dymax CTH line of catheter bonding adhesives cure in seconds when exposed to light energy, are one component, and meet or exceed ISO 10993 standards.

These materials feature excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates used in catheter assembly such as stainless steel, ABS, nitinol, PA, glass, aluminium, polyurethane, and PC and are used in applications like:

  • Y-connector assembly
  • Balloon bonding
  • Marker bands

Single-Use Plastic Component Adhesives
Dymax MD® light-curable adhesives bond a variety of medical-grade plastics used in medical device manufacturing in seconds using LED or UV/Visible light. The fast cure time increases product throughput, decreases work in progress (WIP), and helps reduce overall assembly process costs. These medical-grade adhesives have no solvents added, meet ISO 10993 approvals, and are formulated for bonding a wide variety of substrates including UV-inhibited and tinted plastics. Typical assembly applications include:

  • Reservoirs and housings
  • Respiratory and airway management devices
  • Facemasks
  • Breathing circuits
  • Needles and syringes
  • Blood transfusion sets
  • Blood collection

Needle, Cannula, and Syringe Bonding Adhesives
Dymax needle bonding adhesives are formulated for high-speed, high-volume automated syringe assembly lines that incorporate inline testing and packaging. They bond “on-demand” when exposed to LED or UV/Visible light energy.

Single component and no solvents added, medical-grade adhesives also fluoresce blue or red for easy in-line testing and inspection. Fluorescing properties enhance the performance of automated sensing and vision systems, for easy detection of material coverage and volume.

These needle bonders adhere to a wide variety of plastics, such as polycarbonate, PA, and PMMA, as well as metal and glass substrates. Applications include:

  • Bonding cannulas to hubs in various hypodermic and biopsy needles
  • Syringes
  • Winged infusion sets
  • Blood transfusion sets
  • Blood collection needles
  • Dialysis machines

In-Vitro Diagnostic Device Adhesives
In-vitro diagnostic tests are known to use substrates such as COC/COP thermoplastics that are extremely difficult to bond. Dymax’s line of medical UV adhesives allows for an easier bond by using light to cure the adhesive. Once the adhesive is applied, the manufacturer has unlimited time to adjust the parts. Then, the adhesive can be cured in seconds when exposed to UV/visible light.

Additionally, some formulations include Dymax patented technologies See-Cure or Ultra-Red® fluorescing. Encompass® technology products combine See-Cure and Ultra-Red fluorescing technologies into one product for easy visual verification of material placement, cure, and quality inspection.

Assembly processes include the manufacturing of diagnostic slides, microplates, silicon wafers, or lab on a chip device, which are used in many medical applications such as blood or tissue testing.

Orthopaedic Implant and Surgical Instrument Masking Materials
Mask and seal your implants, surgical instruments, and medical devices in one-step with SpeedMask® orthopaedic maskants. Light-curable masking materials are residue-free and offer reliable protection during most surface finishing. SpeedMask materials are ideal for use on orthopaedic implants such as knee replacements, hip stems, and shoulders.

The temporary protective coatings can seal and protect the machined, ground, or polished surfaces during tumbling, peening, abrading, plating, and plasma-spray coatings, as well as cleaning. Easily apply the masking liquid to components, cure in seconds, and remove either by peeling or burn-off.

Wearable Medical Device Adhesives
Designed for the assembly of wearable medical devices, the 2000-MW series is a dedicated light-curable, medical-grade adhesive product line specifically formulated without isobornyl acrylate (IBOA), a known skin irritant, and TPO, a material of concern. These biocompatible wearable adhesives were developed to address changing customer requirements and skin sensitivity and proximity issues often associated with the medical wearables market.

This range of skin-friendly UV/LED light-curable adhesives, coatings, and encapsulants passed ISO 10993-10 / -23 for sensitization and irritation, as well as ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity. Designed for bonding SS, PC, PI, PVC, TPU, and difficult and low-surface-energy substrates, the adhesives are engineered for reliability with excellent adhesion and aging performance.

Only products designated with “MW” in the product name are designed to be IBOA-free and tested for irritation and sensitization as well as formulated without TPO.
