Are you clear about potting?
Well, we are going to be as transparent as we can! Sometimes you need a clear potting compound. You can see the circuitry underneath, and that can be an aid for inspection or rework. If the circuitry has an optical component or function, then light transmission may be required. In the case of opto-electronic or photonic products (for example LEDs, displays or solar panels), true optical clarity may be specified.
 Potted with ACC Q-Sil 215 - yes, really! |
In addition to transparency, the traditional benefits of potting compounds are still needed: shock and vibration control, moisture and environmental protection, the ability to withstand large thermal cycles and good electrical insulation.
ACC Silicones have engineered a number of their silicone potting materials to meet these requirements and also offer flexibility in cure schedules to improve productivity. ACC
Q-Sil 215 is a two part silicone rubber potting compound. It cures at ambient temperature or can be accelerated by heating. The result is a relatively crystal clear, colourless Shore A 40 elastomer. A condensation cure system, ACC Q-Sil 12, is softer and has good primerless adhesion.
When vibration control is important or there is a need to eliminate stress on sensitive components, one of the soft ACC Q-Gel Silicones is the preferred choice, as they will remain flexible between –55°C and +200°C. Silicone gels provide
excellent moisture protection. Significant reductions in production time are
made possible due to the simple mixing of the low viscosity (~1,000 cps) 1:1
systems, either by hand or with machine dispensing. They feature fast cure times of between 1.5 and 20 hours at room temperatures, which can come down to a few minutes with the use of heat. When cured, ACC Q-Gels are just that - gels, so they can be used where simple potting compound removal is needed.
Opto-electronics applications like LED potting and solar panel manufacture have higher optical requirements. Opti-tec 7020 Optically Clear Silicone Rubber Encapsulant is a two part, clear liquid silicone which will cure at room temperature or can be accelerated at elevated temperatures. Its combination of transparency, non-yellowing and compliance makes it suitable for encapsulation of sensitive electronic or opto-electronic parts, protecting the components from vibration, moisture and atmospheric contaminants. Opti-tec 7020 features a special non-yellowing catalyst system.
Where harder, chemically robust potting systems are needed, consider Opti-tec Optical Epoxies. Opti-tec 5020 Optical Epoxy Encapsulant is a clear, two component, low viscosity epoxy which will cure in thick sections at room temperature. For small volume potting and encapsulating, Opti-tec 5001 and Opti-tec 5012 Optical Epoxy Adhesives offer high optical clarity, low viscosity and variable cures.
