Lead-free Will Require New Solder Pots
Lead-free solder alloys with high tin content will corrode conventional solder pot materials, made from iron or steel.
This means that you must consider replacing or upgrading your solder pots to ones which will withstand the use of lead-free solders. Otherwise you risk the solder pot failing as the solder eats through the crucible. You could have molten solder flowing onto the bench, or even a person.
It could be quite dangerous.
Plato Solder Pots are available with porcelain crucibles - these ceramic crucibles are available as an option with Plato Solder Pots, or may be ordered as a retrofit. Porcelain crucibles:
- eliminate solder degradation due to absorption of metal
- resist corrosion when used with activated fluxes or chemicals and lead-free solders
- assure solder consistency and purity
- wipe clean
Have a look at your tinning operations, and if you have gone to lead-free or are about to, then think about replacing your old pot with a Plato Solder Pot which is suitable for lead-free solders. There are a number of capacity, temperature range and control options.
